Empowering People

Empowering People Through the Conservation of Birds

What we do

We place communities at the heart of conservation by equipping them with skills and opportunities to protect birds and thrive within the biodiversity economy. We do this because we recognise that effective, forward-thinking conservation in South Africa must address cultural diversity and socio-economic realities by integrating environmental protection with education, skills development, job creation, and inclusive, equitable resource utilisation.

How we do it

We believe that communities must derive meaningful benefits from local conservation efforts for these efforts to succeed; our goal is to empower communities to value nature and become champions of important conservation sites, because only through their contribution can biodiversity thrive.

To work towards this goal, the Empowering People Programme targets these three focal points:

  • Environmental Education and Awareness
  • Avitourism
  • Sustainable Livelihoods Approach
