Bird of the Year – Educational Resources

What We Do & Why We Do It

Each year, BirdLife South Africa selects a Bird of the Year to celebrate a special bird species while raising awareness about its conservation needs.

To support educators, we create a comprehensive set of CAPS-aligned lesson plans for Grades 4–6. This includes approximately ten engaging, cross-curricular resources covering English, Mathematics, Natural Sciences, Social Sciences, and Life Skills. The lessons explore the bird’s habitat, behaviour, distribution, threats, and conservation actions. We also produce supporting infographics and posters to bring the learning to life.

How we do it

We work closely with specialist partners to ensure scientific accuracy and educational effectiveness. Quarterly webinars are hosted to support teachers and facilitators in using the materials effectively.
