The distribution of important marine habitat for seabirds is typically collected from satellite tags and GPS biologgers that are fitted to birds at their nest sites. These devices record GPS locations while they forage and commute to different locations collecting critical information on important foraging areas. This information is processed using internationally recognised standards for mapping critical seabird habitat. To date we have submitted this data to the Critical Biodiversity Areas mapping project conducted by SANBI and DFFE to prioritise important marine habitat for future protection. We also use this spatial information to comment on applications for activities and developments, such as seismic surveys and offshore wind farms that are known to have negative impacts on the behaviour and survival of threatened seabird species.
