Flyway and Migrants

Following the Flight of the European Roller

About this Project

The European Roller is one of Africa’s most striking summer visitors, yet much of its migration between Europe, Africa and Central Asia remains poorly understood. We follow individual Rollers using satellite tracking, colour ringing and ground monitoring to map their movements across continents. This allows us to identify key breeding, stopover and non-breeding sites, understand the routes they use, and pinpoint the threats they face along the way. Our work is carried out in close collaboration with researchers, conservation organisations and local partners across the African–Eurasian Flyway.

How we do it

We track European Rollers using satellite tags, colour rings, and ground monitoring to uncover their migration routes, stopover sites, and habitat use across southern Africa and beyond. This data informs targeted conservation actions, helps protect critical sites, and engages local communities and citizen scientists in monitoring efforts. By turning detailed research into practical conservation measures, we ensure these striking migratory birds have safe pathways and thriving habitats throughout their journey.j
