Position statements are useful for providing clear, evidence-based guidance on important conservation issues. BirdLife South Africa has a select number of formal position statements to establish its organisational stance on important issues relevant to the work we do. These position statements convey our stance and provide guidance to policymakers, partners, members, and the public.
A foundational principle for formulating BirdLife South Africa’s positions on key issues is that we demonstrate our commitment to science, transparency, and conservation best practices, while helping to influence policies and actions that protect birds and their habitats. These statements are also aligned to and consistent with BirdLife International’s strategic guidance, aimed at ensuring a cohesive approach to advocacy, and engagement with government and other stakeholders. BirdLife International’s positions cover the following general themes:Â
In addition, BirdLife International may advocate positions in respect of specific treaties and agreements including the Convention on Biological Diversity, the Ramsar Convention and Convention of Migratory Species.Â
Birdlife South Africa has a number of issue-specific position statements, several of which are currently under review. Whilst position statements are important indicators of our stance on certain issues, we subscribe to a flexible and dynamic approach whereby our views are not static but influenced by changing contexts and circumstances.Â
